Eliza Fletcher was a 34-year-old kindergarten teacher and mother of two who was abducted and killed during her morning jog on September 2, 2022. Cleotha Abston, who has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and especially aggravated kidnapping, is charged with snatching Fletcher from a street near the University of Memphis and forcing her into an SUV.

Abston was arrested after police detected his DNA on sandals found near the location where Fletcher was last seen. An autopsy report showed Fletcher died of a gunshot wound to the head. She also had injuries to her right leg and jaw fractures. The toxicology report noted there was fentanyl in her system, but it did not say how long the fentanyl had been in Fletcher’s body or if she had been sexually assaulted.

He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. During a hearing in court, Judge Lee Coffee said Shelby County D.A. Steve Mulroy filed notice with the court that prosecutors will seek the death penalty against Abston.
